When do people meet with DNAide?
Never heard of a genetic counsellor before?
It can be hard to know when meeting with us makes sense. Here are some examples of when people usually work with us.
-
Planning a pregnancy
If you’re planning a pregnancy and are concerned about having a baby with a genetic condition, genetic counselling or testing could help. If there’s a condition in your family, you might wonder about the chance that it could get passed on. A genetic counsellor will talk through this with you to answer all of these questions. But some conditions don’t run in families and hide in our DNA. Genetic carrier screening can let you know if you are at risk of having a child with a condition that has never been seen in your family before so you can be prepared and know your options.

Your doctor recommended a genetic test
If your doctor recommended a genetic test, you might have questions about whether it is right for you. This is especially true for fertility-related genetic tests like Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy (PGT-A). Sometimes your doctor won’t have the time or expertise to answer all of your questions - genetic counselling can help! We’ll explain what the test is, why it is done, and all the pros, cons, benefits, and limitations. Plus, we aren’t associated with your fertility clinic or testing lab, so you know you can feel confident that we won’t pressure you into doing testing.
-
Currently experiencing a miscarriage
If you recently learned that you are having a miscarriage, our hearts are with you during this painful time. If you’re in Canada and are looking to understand why this happened we can help. By collecting the miscarriage tissue (at the clinic or at home) genetic testing can be done to see if a random genetic error lead to the loss, which can sometimes bring peace of mind.
-
Understand why you have infertility
If you know that there can be genetic causes for infertility and recurrent pregnancy loss? If you or your partner have premature ovarian insufficiency, recurrent IVF failure, recurrent pregnancy loss, severe oligospermia, or azoospermia there could be a genetic cause. We can work with your doctor to see if genetic testing is right for you.
-
Review Genetic Results
If you have had a genetic test done as part of your fertility or pregnancy journey, meeting with a genetic counselor can help you understand what the results mean. We have a lot more time to meet with you than a doctor and so most people leave with all their questions answered.
